Emotional Design: Why we Love (or Hate) Everyday Things
- ‘have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’->
- various values in charm, functionality, practicality, etc, important there is a variety
- emotional element may be more critical to a product’s success than practical elements
- visceral (appearance or other senses)
- behavioural (pleasure and effectiveness of use)
- reflective (rationalisation and intellectualism, eg can i tell a story about it, does it appeal to pride or self-image or values)
- the tilt of the teapot indicates the stage of the process we are on
- personal meanings and relationships entirely personal
- these all interweave cognition and emotion
- emotions are inseparable from cognition - humans are inherently irrational creatures
- emotions serve as constant guides to appropriate behaviour
