digital histories in screenshots

screenshot as the day-to-day method, the Easiest method, the most common method of digital archival, despite being often inadequate, sourceless, unlinked etc
best archives (eg internet archive) are full site snapshots
but this takes significant space/energy/maintenance/backup
and isn’t known about/practical for most
and doesn’t account for specific viewpoints/personalisation in content
and often paywalled/password-locked content can’t be captured this way
and content/data/works only viewable through certain tech, becomes obsolete, requires special archival methods and storage (eg flash games, flash games archives)
and screenshots are often time-sensitive/temporary/not relevant for wide audience or long periods (aka not archival)
but average users also don’t clean out their screenshots/data captured and/or stored unnecessarily
or content that’s relevant to individuals simply isn’t relevant enough to capital to preserve/important enough for stretched non-profits with limited resources to preserve
BUT there is a LOT of digital history that hasn’t been archived comprehensively, and is saved only in screenshots stored haphazardly by individuals in disparate locations
work that is often important, culturally valuable, artistically valuable, valuable to subcultures, even of historic or scientific value in some cases
how to preserve screenshots and all of their variants??
think of memes that exist as screenshots of screenshots of screenshots — ‘fried’ screenshots — has become an artistic choice/medium in itself — I’ve even seen recreations of original text content when a passage of text has been found widely valuable but barely legible in screenshot form, or even just ‘ugly’
